TRI-CITIES JUNETEENTH
What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. We recognize this pivotal moment in history as one where all Americans—regardless of their color—were unified in their freedom to pursue life, liberty, and happiness.
Its name stems from the date the historic event occurred: June 19, 1865. On that day, 250,000 African Americans still enslaved in Texas were told that the Civil War had ended, and that they had been legally declared freed.
Why do we celebrate it?
Tri-Cities Juneteenth is a regional celebration where our community can experience cultural diversity by learning about the history of Juneteenth, and African and “Affrilachian” culture through music, art, food, and crafts.
This year, the 2022 Tri-Cities Juneteenth celebration will be held the Riverview Community in Kingsport, TN.
